Kathmandu: Nepal has achieved a milestone in the export of handicrafts, reaching an impressive figure of Rs 12 billion annually. The revelation came during a press conference on the eve of the 20th Handicrafts Trade Fair and 18th Handicrafts Competition organized by the Nepal Handicrafts Federation.
Prachanda Shakya, Chairman of the Federation, shared that Nepali handicrafts are now being exported to over 60 countries, underscoring their significant contribution to the national economy. He emphasized the need for special attention from the government and concerned authorities to protect and promote this vital sector.
The 18th Handicrafts Competition and 20th Trade Fair will take place at Hotel Annapurna, Durbar Marg, from December 14 to 18. The event will feature three pavilions with a total of 130 stalls. Organizers anticipate attracting over 100,000 visitors to the fair.
Cash prizes will be awarded to winners of the competition, with the first-place recipient receiving Rs 50,000, the second-place winner receiving Rs 30,000, and the third-place winner receiving Rs 20,000. Additionally, the occasion will honor 10 senior citizens and distinguished artists over 70 years of age. The event signifies the thriving handicrafts industry in Nepal and its growing significance on the global stage.
